I've been doing my taxes for 2025 and holy crap, I owe a lot. Like, insanely lot from my point of view. So theoretically I made all of this money, but why don't I have it AND still owe this much in taxes? Astute readers will recall that I had a bunch of home improvement done last year, and did you know that biz owners who work from home can expense their home costs?! I didn't!
With that I was able to almost halve my tax, but this exercise in looking at bank statements gave me something interesting to look at: I was spending a LOT of money on digital platform fees. Even worse, I was spending a lot of money on digital platforms that I and others don't use.
I had an online course platform called Thinkific. That's where I hosted my Reddit course and business coaching. Without that platform I can't sell these courses because I have nowhere to host them. Thinkific charges me 99$ per month. But you know what sucks? Practically all of my students buy the course from there and never log in to look at the material. So I'm paying 99$ for the platform to do... Nothing.
I also have a quiz platform called Typeform. The thing with quizzes is, they're really great when I get the inspiration for one and can make one. Most of you probably received a quiz I created in the past few years. But Typeform's free tier only lets me get 10 results for free, and that practically renders the quiz useless in distributing to a mass email list like me. So I have to pay them, but again I only make quizzes when I have an inspiration which doesn't justify the costs.
If you own an online business, I'm willing to bet this isn't exclusively my story. You probably are paying for something you rarely use because you have no other option. Or you're feeling bad because you don't have enough time to make the platform worth the cost. You're now in a situation where YOU're not in charge of what you do for your business; the platform is in charge of what you do or don't do.
And if you know ANYTHING about me, you'd know that's a massive pet peeve of mine.
