A few days ago I sent you a writing that detailed my experience with duty free tax refunds at Charles De Gaulle airport. This all started with my wife’s purchase of a bag, which cost a non-negligible amount of money to warrant a tax refund. This prompted my friend Nataliya to inquire 1) what the bag we bought was LOL and 2) how the human mind works to have certain desires get bigger than money.
Today I thought I would let my wife answer that for you. Many times I have heard “your wife should be a life coach” and after reading this I hope that you’ll agree.
“I think the secret is, I’m very very certain about what I want. And I got to being very very certain about what I want through a lot of trial and error. In fact, I go through a lot of trial and error in my life and it’s because I have very strong experiences around likes and dislikes.
Billy is kind of a person who is okay with everything. I am not like that, I like what I like and I dislike what I dislike. My life is like an endless pursuit of optimizing my options and decisions. This means I may stall a long amount of time when picking lunch or complain a lot when something doesn’t work. But all of it becomes worth it when everything lands perfectly and I get what I like.
When we went to Champs-Elysees, I had a goal to buy a bag but I was actually ready to walk out because I know how inconvenient and uncomfortable the wrong bag is. I wasn’t going to buy a bag just for the sake of buying a bag. And over time I grew a very tall list of requirements for the right bag, and I have no problem not buying a potentially good bag if it falls short on one requirement.
But luckily we found a bag that was perfect for me. It had the perfect length, was also adjustable, wasn’t too small nor too big, and it wasn’t too conspicuous to draw unwanted attention. The price was big, but I know from experience that running into a bag is a rare event. Because of that I can be confident in my purchase, and I’m very happy with this bag even after buying it!
Sometimes Billy makes it sound like he doesn’t want you to feel anything. But I’m here to tell you, you can feel everything but use it to make more informed decisions about yourself! Because you’re worth it, you deserve to make your own happiness!”
So there you have it. Confidence makes buying easy. If you’re a buyer, you can use your previous experiences to build your confidence in action. If you’re a seller, you can cultivate your buyer’s confidence to build an easy purchasing experience.
