Announcing: The Moim, a July Life Coach zine

For a very long time, I’ve been thinking of the best way to achieve two things.

  1. How do I showcase and celebrate the wonderful people I have in my community?
  2. How can I provide a writing product that’s worth paying for?

I’ve operated month-long business coaching programs for quite a while now, and every time I run it I’m pleasantly surprised by the talent in the (figurative) room. Many, many times I have thought: “Man, the world is really missing out on these people”.

I considered talking about them on my social media, but that felt a bit precarious because 1) sharing all of them at once divides the attention, 2) sharing them one by one makes it feel like homework instead of genuine sharing, and 3) I would love for them to talk more about themselves especially since we spent an entire month learning about making offers.

Another thing I’ve been doing for quite a while now is writing like this. But as a writer on a platform that can monetize writings, I always wondered: how can I do something like that? Not really for the sake of being rich, but more like…

I saw Chuck Cruz, a chef, was on Substack. His recipes usually look great on Instagram so I got curious about them and they were behind a paywall. I thought, well that’s neat, I’d totally pay for that. Kenji J. Lopez-Alt also has a Patreon where he publishes recipes and product recommendations to his community.

I also know of paid newsletters for investments giving people the first dibs on a hot market or the latest scoops on interest rates. Another thing I know is for real estate. Something I actually pay for is surfing content from a particular creator who’s very scientific about his approach to surfing (OMBE).

How do I do that for life coaching? First of all, like I explain so many times, life coaching isn’t something people are keen on buying. And as I teach, people buy things they WANT and are ACCESSIBLE. I didn’t have a quick clear answer so I let that question simmer in the mental kitchen for a while.

And then on one day it hit me: I really like being up to date with serialized content like comics and magazines. I love that feeling of picking up a contemporary edition of a magazine and reading about what’s happening, in fact it’s sort of my favorite part about flying — the in-flight magazines.

So I thought, what if I made an online magazine that featured the wonderful people in my community? And along with their contributions, what if I provided a very specific additional value?

As I’ve been discussing these days, creating content that’s not designed for instant gratification is an important responsibility for content creators. In that spirit, I wanted to give readers something new they can try instead of their usual routine of instant gratification like scrolling or snacking or burning out the corporate grind.

I’m so happy to be able to present to you the inaugural episode of my magazine, The Moim. “Moim” in Korean means gathering. My contributors for this edition, Chloe Van Dooren and Teresa Reiland, and I gathered to give you lots of food for thought (literally, you’ll see in the magazine) around the topic of perfectionism.

For the next few editions the magazine will be free, but I would love it if you considered supporting the magazine. Any proceeds I get from my paid subscriptions will be shared with the contributing writers, so your money really goes around and makes itself useful!

Billy’s 2 Cents: The Truth About Perfectionism

I think perfectionism stems from some important confusions. Let's break those down.

Confusion #1: My output defines me.

Confusion #2: Others define the value of my output.

Confusion #3: My goal as a X is to be a good X.

How do we dispel these confusions? What does Billy recommend for you to try this month? Check out my contribution to this month’s edition.

Unshaming Spotlight: Self-Love With Perfectionism

Unshaming witness Chloe Van Dooren shares self-love with perfectionism.

When my friend and Buddhist coach Billy asked me to write something about perfectionism through my “unshaming” lens, I felt happy. I love this topic, and I was glad he thought of asking me.
“When do I need to send this to you?” I asked him last Sunday.
“Next week!” he replied.
It’s now Friday of “next week,” and I’ve only just started working on the text—even though I had plenty of time to do it earlier. Why? (Spoiler alert: the answer is related to today’s topic)
Yes… My procrastination had everything to do with perfectionism. I waited all week because I was trying to avoid the discomfort of actually having to do it “as well as I could.”
Yet when Billy talked about procrastination on his IG Stories the other day, I bombarded him with my thoughts in a matter of minutes. At the time, I was coach-potatoeing—half-watching a TV show, half-absorbed by my phone.
It was easy and flowy when I was being spontaneous—when there were no expectations, nothing official.
It became hard the second it turned into an “assignment.”
I’m sure you know what I mean.

Food & Energy: Energy of Perfectionism

Psychic & Chef Teresa Reiland shares her observations around the energy of perfectionism.

One way to think about energy is the direction it is moving in. Is the energy moving upward or downward? Is it moving toward the center or is it moving out and expanding? Is it moving slowly or fast?
Perfectionism often prevents movement. There is a tight, inward quality as we try to hold something in or mold something to our ideal. It holds aspects of control. One example is when we don’t say something because we are afraid it might come out wrong or we are afraid of how it might be perceived. We hold it inside and this creates pressure.
I think movement in any area of our lives, or our body, can help the energy flow. That’s why if you feel stuck in your flow of content, going for a walk in nature, or changing your environment, will often help. Even if they don’t seem directly related.

Learn the energetics of perfectionism along with Teresa’s food recommendations for shifting out of your perfectionism, along with her activity recommendations!

I am so thrilled to be able to finally share this with you after working on it for the past few weeks. Double thank you to my contributors, and triple thank you to all my readers. With that, I hope you check out the full edition HERE.
